Task Abstract:

Students will produce a product using up-to-date machiningtechniques.

Task Objectives:

  • Students will learn how to design and manufacture a guitar neck using Mastercam and a CNC Milling Machine.
  • The criteria for this project was to first create interest for the students, curriculum based for the school system and most of all, to incorporate Mastercam and CNC Milling which are major parts of the manufacturing process.

Esssential Understandings/Questions:

  • Why is Mastercam an important part of Manufacturing?
  • What purpose does inspection serve?
  • What steps are needed for manufacturing a part?

Task Description:

The students will design a guitar neck that will be milled on a 3 Axis CNC Milling Machine. The design of the neck will then be programmed using Mastercam. Once the guitar neck is drawn, then it will be toolpathed using the proper cutters on the CNC Milling Machine. The program will be verified on the computer first to see if there are any drawing or programming errors.

Aluminum; vacuum pump; fixtures; gaskets; valve; dowel pin; neck blank; cutters; Mastercam Program, computer and CNC Milling Machine
