Task Abstract: Create a solid model and drawing for a sheet metal component using the SolidWorks software application. (click here for Sheet Metal Illustration Labeling Worksheet)

Task Objectives:
|
Essential Understandings/Questions: What is a pattern or stretch out? How is it used to create everyday items? Patterns are made of a material in a flat state which is intended to be bent or folded into a specified shape. How are developments used in our everyday life? Patterns are used to create ordinary items. Some of these items are clothing, shoes, wallets, and purses, while the aerospace, automotive and construction industries are also common venues for development applications. |
Task Description: Upon completion of theory, worksheets and reading assignment, the students will Solid model a sheet metal component using the appropriate sheet metal applications within Solid Works and applying common sheet metal practices. The part will be applied to a drawing and an accurate flat pattern will be given. |
Resources Required - Computer station with SolidWorks CAD software, teacher created lesson plan and accompanying activities, printing station |
Prior Learning Required (i.e. prerequisite subjects if applicable) - Basic training in SolidWorks software applcation, understanding and ability to perform basic Orthographic Projection, ability to read blueprints, basic mathematical computation. |
Context within which the work was produced (i.e. environment) - This sheet metal project is to be completed in a classroom setting and encompass 3 days of theory, demonstrations and activities. |
Individual or Group Work - This project is intended to be an individual product. The student could then be matched up with an HVACR student and complete the actual component from the documentation that is created using sheet metal if there is the appropriate departments available. |
Special needs - The worksheets provided with this curriculum allow for a variety of learner types. |
Educator Comments, Reflections, Suggestions - The sheet metal assignment was intended to enhance the development segment within my curriculum. There are many other applications which could assist in student learning and applications. Each teacher should look to identify a product within their area to enhance the curriculum. All around us is the growing trend to "think green." I look forward to sharing with the students the concept of light pollution and how it is affecting the lighting industry. There are so many ways to protect the earth while saving money and there will be students interested in learning about this area. |
